Traditional TVS or fuse solutions have limitations in terms of sustained overvoltage protection, current limiting and recoverability. The LT4356-1 / LT4356-2 are part of ADI’s ‘Surge Stopper’ series of surge suppressors and are active overvoltage/overcurrent protection controllers. The LT4356 surge suppressor protects the load from the effects of high-voltage transients. During overvoltage events (such as sudden load drops in automotive applications), it regulates the output by controlling an external N-channel MOSFET. The output is limited to a safe level, thereby allowing the load to continue operating normally. The LT4356 also monitors the voltage drop between the VCC and SNS pins to prevent overcurrent faults. An internal amplifier limits the current sense voltage to 50 mV.

Key differences between the LT4356-1 and LT4356-2:
LT4356-1: Enters a locked-out state following an overcurrent or overvoltage fault timeout, requiring a reset or power cycle to recover.
LT4356-2: Automatically retries following an overcurrent or overvoltage fault timeout, making it suitable for applications requiring self-recovery capability.
Both devices are essentially identical in terms of core protection functions, packaging and pin configuration; the choice between them depends primarily on the system’s requirements regarding post-fault recovery behaviour.
