The LT4356 surge suppressor protects the load from high-voltage transients. It regulates the output by controlling an external N-channel MOSFET during overvoltage events (such as sudden drops in automotive load). The output is limited to a safe level, thereby allowing the load to continue operating normally. The LT4356 also monitors the voltage drop between the VCC and SNS pins to prevent overcurrent faults. An internal amplifier limits the current-sensing voltage to 50 mV.

The LT4356 can utilise back-to-back FETs in place of Schottky diodes to provide reverse input protection, thereby reducing voltage drop and power dissipation. The shutdown pin reduces the quiescent current of the LT4356-1 to less than 7 µA during shutdown. The LT4356-2 differs from the LT4356-1 in that, during shutdown, it reduces the quiescent current to 60 µA and keeps the auxiliary amplifier powered, allowing it to function as an under-voltage lockout or always-on regulator.
