TI’s battery management IC portfolio covers the three core areas of charge control, safety protection and state-of-charge monitoring. Designed for applications such as consumer electronics, portable devices, power tools, drones, humanoid robots, energy storage and industrial equipment, it supports a wide range of battery chemistries—from single-cell to multi-cell lithium-ion, lithium iron phosphate and nickel-metal hydride configurations. Leveraging mature analogue circuits and patented algorithms, TI provides reliable, full-lifecycle management solutions for battery packs.
I. Battery Chargers
TI’s battery chargers comprise three main topologies: linear chargers, switch-mode buck chargers and buck-boost bidirectional chargers. They support multiple input sources, including USB PD, Type-C, adapters and solar power, covering everything from low-current single-cell charging to high-power multi-cell fast-charging solutions. The devices feature a built-in charging state machine that automatically completes the pre-charge, constant-current, constant-voltage and charge termination processes. They incorporate input overvoltage protection, input current limiting, battery temperature-based charge inhibition and charge timeout protection, whilst supporting I²C digital configuration to allow flexible adjustment of charging current, float voltage and safety thresholds.
Representative series include the BQ24xx single-cell charging ICs and the BQ25xx multi-cell high-power charging solutions; certain models support bidirectional power delivery, enabling battery discharge to external devices, making them suitable for power banks and portable energy storage systems. High-power versions can deliver charging currents of 20A or more and support up to 240W PD fast charging, meeting the fast-charging requirements of power tools and vacuum cleaners. Models designed for humanoid robots and automated equipment feature low quiescent power consumption, high conversion efficiency and rapid dynamic loop response, reducing heat generation during the charging phase and extending battery cycle life. Some models support remote battery wake-up and automatic retry in the event of a battery short circuit, simplifying the development of the system’s main controller and enabling independent charge management without the need for complex MCU intervention.
II. Battery Protectors
TI battery protectors form the fundamental hardware defence line for battery safety. They are categorised into standalone protection ICs and integrated protection solutions, primarily used to monitor cell voltage, charge and discharge currents, and battery temperature. In the event of a fault, they rapidly shut down the charge and discharge FETs to prevent hazardous conditions. Core protection functions include cell overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent during charging and discharging, output short-circuit, high temperature and low-temperature charge lockout. They support multi-level protection thresholds and configurable delay filtering to prevent false triggering.
Standalone protection devices are often employed as a second layer of redundancy, used in conjunction with energy meters and battery monitoring systems to meet the stringent safety standards of energy storage, industrial and automotive electronics applications; integrated solutions, on the other hand, combine protection drivers and detection circuits, making them suitable for small battery packs. They support high-side FET driving and maintain communication links even in fault conditions, enabling the host to read fault flags. The products operate across a wide temperature range of –40°C to 85°C, with some automotive-grade versions capable of extending to over 125°C, making them suitable for outdoor equipment, drones and low-power energy storage units. In battery packs for humanoid robot joints, the protector can rapidly respond to the high inrush current during motor start-up, preventing the risk of short-circuit thermal runaway, and acts as the final hardware barrier for battery safety.
III. Battery Fuel Gauge
TI’s fuel gauge is powered by the patented Impedance Track™ algorithm and serves as the sensing hub of the entire battery management system. Unlike simple voltage estimation, it continuously monitors voltage, current and temperature, tracking in real time how the battery’s internal resistance changes with ageing, discharge rate and temperature. It accurately calculates State of Charge (SOC), State of Health (SOH), remaining runtime and self-discharge compensation. It maintains a high level of measurement accuracy even as the battery ages or during high-current pulse discharges. Texas Instruments.
The product range comprises system-side and battery-pack-side fuel gauges, with a comprehensive selection of models supporting single to multiple strings. The BQ27xx series offers single-cell solutions, whilst the BQ40Z50, BQ34Z100 and others support multi-string lithium-ion and lithium iron phosphate batteries. Certain models incorporate built-in cell balancing, hardware protection and battery authentication functions, enabling a single chip to simultaneously perform measurement, protection and balancing. Battery data is reported to the host controller via I²C, with support for SHA-256 battery authentication to identify original manufacturer batteries and mitigate safety risks posed by non-compliant batteries. These solutions are widely used in laptops, handheld devices, robotic vacuum cleaners, portable AI devices and energy storage systems. For humanoid robots, they can accurately report the remaining battery life of individual joints, supporting overall energy management, providing early warnings of battery ageing and assisting the system in implementing power-reduction protection strategies.
